Health & Safety Specialist - Vancouver

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure the company is current on all Health & Safety legislation and is compliant with provincial regulations relating to Occupational Health & Safety as necessary;
  • Oversee all aspects of Hollyburn Environmental Safety Program, including the Exposure Control Plan, ACM Control and Abatement Plan, Environmental Assessments, etc.;
  • Source, research, develop and make recommendations for the Occupational Health & Safety policies, practices and programs;
  • Promote Team Member awareness, increase participation and encourage the adoption of safe work behaviours;
  • Recommend training programs for Team Members;
  • Act as a representative on the National Occupational Health & Safety Committee (OHSC), in addition to supporting the OHSC with providing admin support for coordinating and providing required minutes, reports and statistics, inspections, etc.;
  • Act as a representative on the Environmental Committee;
  • Assist with accident/incident investigations and recommend effective preventative measures;
  • Spearhead and coordinate the creation and implementation of Work Safe procedures in conjunction with management and the Health & Safety Committee;
  • Maintain proper safety related documentation, programs and initiatives;
  • Inspect buildings for existing and potential hazards and recommend corrective and/or preventative measures;
  • Assist with the coordination and implementation of company Emergency Plans;
  • In coordination with the Procurement Manager and Quality Services Manager, ensure that all contractors meet safety code and worksite regulations;
  • Co-ordinate Environmental Assessments on new and existing Hollyburn buildings with 3rd party specialists;
  • Analyze and communicate results to the appropriate individuals (management and building level) and ensure all recommendations are followed;
  • Ensure all Hollyburn Team members (new and existing)  are properly trained on asbestos, lead and any other environmental hazards;
  • Oversee the development and implementation of site-specific programs including Respirator Fit Testing;
  • Keep documentation and records up to date to ensure compliance with all internal and regulatory requirements;
  • Liaise with Hollyburn Team Members and Management to ensure safety is a priority;
  • Any other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum of 2-5 years of relevant experience in a Health & Safety position (i.e., Construction Safety Officer);
  • Professional certifications in safety are an asset (Asbestos, WHMIS, First Aid, etc.);
  • Post Secondary Degree or Diploma in Environmental Technology /Health & Safety a definite asset;
  • Experience developing and implementing health, safety and environment policies, procedures & practices;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build strong relationships with all levels across organization;
  • Energetic, self motivated and presents health and safety in a positive and practical manner;
  • Proven and strong leadership skills;
  • Positive attitude, self starter, flexible,  team player and solutions orientated;
  • Experience doing behavioural observations, site inspections, health and safety audits, etc.;
  • Strong Word, Excel computer skills;
  • Must be able to speak, write and read text in English;
  • Fast paced environment, must be able to work under pressure;
  • Must have a vehicle and a valid B.C. Driver’s License (mileage will be provided).
